Small cells a $4 Billion opportunity, says SNS Research report

DUBAI, UAE. 22nd June 2017: SNS Research's latest report indicates that global spending on small cells is expected to surpass $4 Billion annually by the end of 2020.

Driven by the growing demand for in-building wireless coverage and the huge influx of mobile data traffic, conventional macrocells alone are no longer deemed sufficient to handle the needs of today's wireless subscribers. In addition, the imminent adoption of centimeter and millimeter wave spectrum, to support higher data rates in 5G networks, necessitates the usage of much smaller cell sizes.

To cope with growing capacity and coverage requirements, mobile operators are significantly increasing their investments in a variety of Heterogeneous Network or HetNet infrastructure technologies such as strategically deployed small cells, carrier Wi-Fi and DAS networks. Small cells, in particular, have emerged as a preferred option due to their low cost, ease of integration, and flexibility to support both indoor and outdoor applications.

Besides standalone femtocell, picocell and microcell platforms, small cells are also beginning to be deployed in a C-RAN architecture to leverage the benefits of resource pooling and multi-cell coordination. This trend is particularly prevalent in the indoor and enterprise segments, with a number of dedicated vendor solutions such as CommScope's OneCell, SpiderCloud's E-RAN, Ericsson's Radio Dot, and Huawei's LampSite.

SNS Research estimates that global spending on small cells will reach more than $3 Billion by the end of 2017. As mobile operators continue to rely heavily on small cells for indoor coverage enhancement, network densification and rural connectivity, the market is further expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 10% between 2017 and 2020, eventually accounting for $4.3 Billion in annual spending.

The “HetNet Ecosystem (Small Cells, Carrier Wi-Fi, C-RAN & DAS): 2017 – 2030 – Opportunities, Challenges, Strategies & Forecasts” report presents an in-depth assessment of the HetNet ecosystem including enabling technologies, key trends, market drivers, challenges, standardization, regulatory landscape, deployment models, use cases, vertical markets, service provider case studies, opportunities, future roadmap, value chain, ecosystem player profiles and strategies. The report also presents forecasts for HetNet infrastructure investments from 2017 till 2030. The forecasts cover 6 individual submarkets and 6 regions.

The research publication will be of value to current and future potential investors into the HetNet ecosystem, as well as enabling technology providers, HetNet infrastructure vendors, mobile operators and other ecosystem players who wish to broaden their knowledge of the ecosystem.
